Why You Should Say No To Tesco

1. There just isn’t the evidence that Beeston has the capacity for an extra 9000 square metres of retail space. The 2008 Greater Nottingham Retail Study concluded ‘After allowing for committed developments (i.e. the smaller Tesco already given planning consent and Lidl) there will be an oversupply of convenience goods floorspace in Beeston.’ (Convenience shopping means everyday shopping, i.e. for food and other daily essentials)

We are concerned that if this larger Tesco gets the go ahead our smaller supermarkets and food retailers will be put under too much pressure and may go out of business.

2. Traffic congestion is already a problem on the Station Road/Middle Street junction, and a store of this size is likely to increase this, despite the proposed signalised junction off Middle Street.

3. We already have a large Tesco in Toton and the huge Tesco Extra in Long Eaton. Do we need yet another which would give us 3 large Tesco stores within 3 miles?

4. The Broxtowe Local Plan states: ‘New development must achieve an efficient use of land, bearing in mind the overall aim of sustainability.’

This store would boast certain ‘green’ credentials such as rainwater collection for flushing loos and its own energy supply from a combined heat and power unit. Although these are to be welcomed, on their own they do not make for a sustainable use of that land. At a time when there is a shortage of housing and pressure on the Green Belt to build more homes, would not a more sustainable use involve a smaller store along with housing and some land for allotments? It is not unusual on the Contintent to see supermarkets built with apartments on the roof.
