All the evidence seems to be that Beeston just doesn’t have the capacity for a supermarket of this size. I am very concerned about the traffic congestion this development will create.

There are several large supermarkets already servicing the needs of Beeston. A store of this size will kill off the small independent shops that have made such a positive contribution to the community for many years. Once these shops have closed due to artificial low pricing from Tesco, competition gone, Tesco up the prices. Not only do we lose choice we have to pay more for the priviledge. Tesco coming to Beeston is bad enough, twice the size is taking the p–s.

We use the shops in Beeston almost every day, and value the variety of greengrocers, butchers, bakers, florists, pharmacies, etc, as being part of a genuine community, offering choice and value.

We are in agreement with the comments made by other correspondents opposing the Tesco plans – they are well rehearsed and don’t need repeating. Tesco represent only their shareholders and have a well earned reputation for doing that successfully and ruthlessly. But has Broxtowe Council the bottle to resist what will undoubtedly be a well run and well funded campaign on behalf of Tesco? I very much hope so.

We should welcome Tesco’s investment in Beeston, and a bit of healthy competition with Sainsbury’s is also welcome, if nothing else but to have an alternative supermarket. However the town simply doesn’t need a retail outlet on the scale now being proposed. Our family use Sainsbury’s as well as the independant retailers (especially the greengrocer, butcher and bakeries) and really value the diverse nature of the shopping experience and the ‘buzz’ the Beeston enjoys as a result.

We have ived in Beeston since 1964 and have seen many changes, not all of them good. Where once there were multiple smallshops creating a lively and pricewise shopping centre we seem to have charity shops and boarded up store fronts. There is the welcome appearance of a mens outfitters but several shops have oped for a few months then closed down. With the opening of Tesco this will surely exacerbate the situation. We can see that families need to bulk buy and Sainsbury have filled this gap and now with Lidl opening there is further choice. Surely the population of Beeston, Bramcote & Chilwell do not need any more choice? I suspect Tesco only decided to come because of the proposed tram. Which poses the question of whether Tesco was aware of the tram plans before the public were? political departments

The evidence that these hypermarkets totally destroy the infrastructure of a local community can be seen from other local towns where Tesco have moved in when there has already been adequate coverage.

    - Long Eaton had ASDA but now has a bigger Tesco opposite. The town centre is now a shadow of what it was.

    - Ilkeston has a new Tesco and the high street is now a succession of shop closures.

The prediction is that Beeston will suffer a similar fate as parking and traffic problems will keep shoppers away from the high street.

This obsession with huge hypermarkets is not sustainable and is destroying the heart of our communities. It should be replaced with smaller, local outlets that give existing businesses a chance of survival.

I am part of a group fighting the plans to put an access road through the Erewash Valley countryside to the proposed Stanton Iron Works housing development.

We offer you our full support.

    Richard.

Building the Tesco would eradicate years of dereliction on this site & introduce some healthy retail competition. If people don’t want a Tesco, then they won’t shop there, simple, and the independent traders can continue unabated to retail at uncompetitive prices. You make your own choice. The location is at the heart of the town centre and exactly where new shopping facilities are appropriate. If you don’t want Tesco, club together and buy the site off Tesco. Then, and only then, will you gain the right and the ability to prevent a new shop opening in our shopping centre.

Tesco would create jobs that are much needed in this current economic climate. However, there are questions over if this type of market is already saturated in this area?

Where’s all this development going to end? What’s to stop Asda or Morrisons from applying to take a chunk out of beeston. This is really serious in principle i believe. I’ve been too busy in my day job to be aware and the next thing i see is some of beeston’s history being flattened. Yes i’m furious with this. I don’t want any Tesco whatsoever. It’s only going to increase traffic congestion anyway. Tesco are doing this all over the country. Big business is the curse of our time. A relatively small group of ambitious little men and women who’s only purpose in life is to become silly rich at our expense. I’m sick of them. The Council’s are just as bad for allowing this. Awareness by all of us “ordinary” people needs to be increased i believe, in order to prevent our environment and quality of life from being completely ruined.
